Here at The PESSN we take great pride in our SEND PE and sports provision. We have a highly skilled team working with Special Educational Needs and Disability children across the borough. We run many successful SEND sporting events and festivals across the academic year. Our full member schools benefit from tailored SEND CPD support as well as various programmes run through the year delivered in schools.
The Network also delivers in school programmes, teaching PE and activities tailored to the SEND students to ensure they are accessing PE in the same way as mainstream students across the borough.
SEND PE SUPPORT IN SCHOOLS.
The programme consists of the Network working in school for 6 – 8 weeks, all SEND students are brought together with their support staff and one to ones.
We deliver lessons that demonstrate different ways for the students to access as much as possible focusing on agility, balance and co-ordination as well as movement patterns. Supporting students with social skills such as listening skills, waiting, sharing, individual work, and focus is also part of the lessons.
We gradually hand over the lessons for the school to continue to run and revisit through the year to give extra support and ideas.
The programme has been very successful with student’s attainment and helping them with accessing class PE.
Specfic SEND Events
Our calendar includes many inclusive competitions across London, we organise students to represent Southwark and we work with great organisations such as Southwark Council, Panathlon, NHS, Cambridge House, Sport England, Youth Games, Youth Sport Trust.
Every year The Network run the SEND Festivals of Sport all through the year. The aim is to run at least one per term due to the high demand for the event. The festivals consist of running up to 10 sports simultaneously throughout the day.
Every sport is lead by a specialist coach who is in turn supported by secondary school young sport leaders as well as ambassadors from LSBU. Each sport has four time slots through the day which are booked up by schools. Some schools come for just one session, or a morning or afternoon, or they stay for the whole day.
Sports include Tennis, Trampolining, Handball, Cricket, Football, Capoeira, basketball, seated volleyball, gym sessions, street dance, athletics, boccia, new age kurling, archery, etc
We cater for both secondary and primary ages. It is great to see so many children and adults smiling and enjoying being part of an amazing event. Festivals attract a minimum of 200 to well over 300 students and all slots are usually booked up within two days of information being sent out.
The Network run various other SEND festivals also. They include our sailing festival that has to be run over four different dates due to the demand at Surrey Docks. We also have to run our ten pin bowling festival at Surrey Quays over three different dates as we have to accommodate over 50 schools for that event every year.
