LPESSN Women in sports week 2016!

London PE and School Sports Network celebrated women in sports week! We had a range of activities planned for the week, which was all girls only. We wanted to give the girls opportunities to take part in different sports which they may not have had opportunities to do so before.

On Monday 3rd October we had a boxing and fitness festival, for primary schools in the morning and secondary schools in the afternoon at Bacon’s College. We worked with 8 primary schools and 2 secondary schools. We partnered with ‘Boxing 4 schools’ on this event, it was a great day and all the girls loved it! They took part in skipping, fitness session (push ups, sit ups, burpees) and learnt a 10 skill sequence.

On Wednesday 5th October we had a rugby festival for primary and secondary schools at Old Alleynian’s Rugby Club, Dulwich. We partnered with ‘Give it a try’ for this event. The girl’s session involved fitness skills, opportunities to play tag and contact (secondary) against other schools. It was an amazing day and all the girls left with smile!

On Thursday 6th October we held Capoeira sessions for year 5 and 6 girls. Capoeira is originally from Brazil and is a form of martial arts with elements of dance. This was a great event, as the majority of the girls who took part wasn’t sure what it was at the beginning, however all left loving Capoeira! They got to learn about the history of Capoeira, new dance moves and forms of martial arts.

On Friday 7th October we held a SEN festival of sport at Damilola Taylor Centre. For this day we had a range of activities going on during the day, tennis, athletics, rugby, trampoline, football, boccia and new aged curling. We had amazing feedback from the teachers, most importantly everyone left with a smile!

Our women in sports week was a huge success, we had over 260 girls taking part in sport!

National School Sport Week

This year’s National School Sport Week took place from 20-24th June and what a week it was.

Our events included 2 summer athletics festivals held at Southwark Park and Dulwich College. A big well done to our year 3/4 winners from both days Goodrich and Dog Kennel Hill, and our year 5/6 winners Pilgrims Way and St Josephs Camberwell. The standard of competition continues to improve every year!

We also had our termly SEN Festival of Sport held at Damilola Taylor Centre in Peckham. Children took part in sports such as sitting volleyball, rugby, boccia & new age kurling, trampolining and tennis.

Our last event was our Olympic & Paralympic day held at Bacon’s College. This was an inclusive event for mainstream and SEN children and they were given the opportunity to have sessions in archery, boxing, rugby, boccia and sitting volleyball.

A big thank you to all the schools that came to our events across the week, it was great to see over 800 children take part in sport.

LPESSN Dance Festival Day 2

Day 2 of the LPESSN Dance Festival @ the Scoop London.

150 excitable children arrived at the scoop for day 2 of our dance festival ready to perform their dance routines with the challenge to include their chosen sport into their routine, of which all 8 schools did an amazing job of doing. We saw many great dances throughout the day where the judges     (Sam and Lindon) were also looking for, presentation, creativity, choreography/content, execution and performance from all schools. The children loved having some free time to bust out some moves on the dance floor with all their mates where we saw many dance offs appear between groups and even with our judges!. They also got the chance to see how our latest member of the team BRIO moved on the dance floor.

Sadly we could only have one winner for the day, despite the judges saying ALL schools were winners in their eyes we could only have one school take home the trophy of which was….

day 2

A big well done again to everyone who performed at our dance festival we were all blown away but all the effort and enthusiasm that was put into the dances and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

LPESSN Dance Festival Day 1

On the last two days of term we held our LPESSN dance festival at The Scoop More London.

Day 1: On Thursday 26th May we had over 250 children turn up to the The Scoop to take part in our dance festival. We had 11 different schools, who could bring squads up to 20. The theme of the dance festival was the Rio Olympics, so all the performances had to be inspired by a sport which is in the Olympics.

We was lucky enough to have Sam Fleet and Lindon Barr from Zoo Nation, who have also performed in the West End hit ‘Into the Hoods’ perform and also judge our competition!

We had some fantastic performances inspired by Taekwondo, Swimming, Athletics and many more. It was a fantastic day with face painters, music, sunshine and a lot of happy children!

It was a very close competition and in the end the winners were…

Brunswick Park primary school!! Well done, your performance was fantastic!

KS2 Cricket

The last week in half term we held our cricket competitions.

Firstly we held a girls only KS2 Cricket competition on Tuesday 17th May at Burgess park. This day was fantastic the girls showed great enthusiasm and really enjoyed the competition, which was the most important thing!

It was very close between St Joseph’s Gomm road and Charles Dickens… and in the end the winner was… St Joseph’s Gomm road! Well done girls!

Our next competition was KS2 Mixed Cricket on Thursday 19th May at Southwark park. The weather held up for us thankfully. We was all very impressed with the standard at this competition, the children were fantastic!

Again it was between Charles Dickens and St Joseph’s Gomm road and in the end St Joseph’s Gomm road just edged it with more runs. Well done to both teams!

We also had Friends of Southwark come down to our competition to hand out certificates and the trophy, which the children loved. Thank you again to Friends of Southwark for coming!

Our final cricket competition of the week was on Wednesday 25th May at Dulwich park. The standard again was great, everyone who participated should be very proud of themselves! It was very close between Goodrich and Dog Kennel Hill, in the end there could only be one winner… Well done to Dog Kennel Hill!

Year 5/6 Gymnastics

On Tuesday 24th May we held a year 5/6 gymnastics competition at Brunswick park primary school. We had 5 schools compete, who each brought along 6 children. The performance standard was fantastic, everyone who competed should be very proud of themselves.

However in the end there could only be one winner… Well done to Charles Dickens!
